How to Spend One Day in Dubrovnik

Only have a day to spend in Dubrovnik? Check out this day trip itinerary if you want to see one of the most magical places Croatia has to offer. There are a number of options for a memorable day trip from Dubrovnik. If you have more time to spend here I would definitely suggest staying longer. However, I have visited Dubrovnik twice and both happened to be day trips! Here’s how you can make the most of the short time here.

Other nearby trips also include Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina as well as Kotor, Montenegro. I have linked my other blog posts about what you can do and see in these cities.

Best time to visit

Before Dubrovnik became a well-known destination it used to be primarily a summer destination. More recently it has much to offer even when the days get a bit colder. Summer can get super packed with tourists. During the peak season (July-August), it gets challenging just to enter the Old Town. If you want to get the best experience, I suggested going in May or September when the crowds die down and the weather still allows you to enjoy both the sun and the sea.

A World Heritage Site

Dubrovnik was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. In the past, it was the capital of the Republic of Ragusa, when it achieved a remarkable level of development thanks to its maritime trade. Most of its historical public buildings and fortresses were built during the Renaissance and Baroque period. In the past few years, both Game of Thrones series and Star Wars movie scenes were filmed there.

Explore Old Town

All the great sights and attractions are in the Old Town. Since it’s the most iconic area in the whole city, the best time to explore it is in the early morning. Start your walk at the Pile Gate (West Gate) and wander around the cobblestone, picturesque streets. The most famous street in the Old Town is Stradun offering a range of cafe bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.

Walk along the City Walls

Take a walk along the city walls to see the city from the best angles and get photos of the iconic fortress.

Views from Srđ hill

Take a cable car to Srd hill to get an aerial view of the city and Adriatic sea. Be sure to take your camera with you!

Have Lunch in Old Town

Stop for lunch at Gradska Kavana Arsenal Restaurant, this restaurant is near Dubrovnik’s main square, Luža, located in the very heart of the historic district. It has great food and a relaxing atmosphere. We had a light lunch and it was good quality and no more expensive than anywhere else (surprisingly for such an amazing spot).

Take a Game of Thrones Tour

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, discovering the famous locations in Dubrovnik where the series was filmed is a must-do! Check out the Walls of Dubrovnik Tours offered here.

Try Croatian Coffee, Crepes (Palacinke) or treat yourself to some Ice cream

Sunset is the right time to enjoy some drinks and the most spectacular sunsets. Buža cafe may not be the fanciest cafe bar, but it’s the one with the fanciest view. Definitely a fabulous spot for coffee.
