Visit Vis, a Lesser Known Croatian Island

How to Get to Vis

You can take the most popular ferry line, Jadrolinija from Split to Vis. They only run twice a day and take 2.5 hours in each directions.

Where is Vis and Why You Should Visit

Vis is the furthest island in the Adriatic from the Croatian coast hidden behind the Islands of Hvar. It’s about a 2.5 hour ferry ride from Split. The island was closed to the public until 1989, escaping the large commercial tourism development. The island was able to retain most of it’s natural beauty. Vis was beautiful because the ocean is beautiful and there are less tourists because it is a less known Island. This was one of my favourite Islands because you were thoroughly able to enjoy Island living.

What to Do?

There is an option to do a variety of boat tours and excursions on the Island but I would recommend picking a spot to just enjoy a beach day. I did some exploring and had one of Croatia’s national beers, Karlovacko and ate the best cevape of my whole trip.

Exploring the Main Towns on Vis

Vis town is situated in a protected bay, Viska Luka on the northern end of the island. At one end of the bay is the port of Vis (Luka), where the ferries from Split arrive. There are many cafes and bars along the waterfront.

I also took a 20 minute walk to the other end of the bay to the small village of Kut. The road runs along the waters edge view amazing views.

“Vis”-it the Fabulous Beaches

In my opinion, Vis has some of the best beaches in Croatia. Most of the beaches are stone beaches but there are a few sand beaches on the island. Some good beach options inlcude:

  1. Stoncica
  2. Stiniva
  3. Srebena
  4. Granvalac
