Typically I like seeking out places in Croatia that haven’t been explored yet but Plitvice Lakes (PlitviÄka Jezera) is the oldest, largest and most famous National Park in Croatia. I couldn’t keep going to Croatia and not visit their most visited park. In 1979 Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register.

Each year, more than 1 million people visit the lakes. Entrance fees just like at Krka National Park increase significantly in the summer time, at up to 250 kuna (ā¬34 per adult per day in summer 2018).

When I visited Plitvice lakes I booked an organized tour for me and my friend. This was probably the best way to do it because it was a small group of 6 of us being led by a guide and we were able to plow through big crowds and get most of the lakes hiked. The national park is world-famous for its lakes arranged in cascades. Sixteen lakes can be seen from the surface. It’s one of those experiences that makes you go wow. The azure blue lake water surrounds the entire hike but unfortunately you can’t swim.
I did an organized tour through Hotel Ilirija
The direct link to the excursion is linked here.

The cost was pretty steep but after doing the calculation of how much it would cost to do the trip to the lakes on my own the amount came to similar and I figured this would involve less hassle. I was right because it was one of the best experiences I had.
Cost per person for the day excursion was 500 kuna which was equivalent to about $100 CDN. This included transportation to and from the lakes, entrance fees into the park, lunch, a guided tour and boat fares across the lower lakes. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and the overall experience was great.
I encourage wearing comfy shoes and have lots of water on hand because it gets very hot and there is a lot of walking. Be prepared for any types of weather too.

Overall, this is something that everyone should make sure they do while in Croatia. The tour guide advised us that people visit the lakes at all times of the year and are particularly beautiful in the winter time when the snow falls.
